Happy accidents! I was playing around with the contrast settings on my SX-70. One came out too dark and the other too light. However, I think for the lovely subjects depicted in each, the photographs developed beautifully and are contextually represented very well. But that’s just my opinion!

Note: I do realize how the resolution of these images leads much to be desired. I was too excited to post them and ended up using my iphone since it was within arm’s reach. Of course. I will upload the superior images soon.

Also, stay tuned as I will be documenting the framing of these polaroids in the near future.

To Vernal,

After a brief hiatus, I’m back! Looking forward to some spring cleaning. Take the time to watch the rain as it changes shape once it hits your window. See flowers grow from green to pink. Watch the snow make its final disappearance, uncovering old ground just waiting to take the stage and shine again. Taking out old dusty boxes of neglected and forgotten photographs. Remembering lost moments and conjuring up new memories as I try to piece together the snippets of a history. Like the continuum of  winter into this coming season, the still image is only a fraction of time, frozen yet ever evolving.

A visit to the ICP Photography Collection.

The International Center of Photography has a kind of secret stash of photographic history.  I say “secret” only because this is a huge collection of photographic materials, but that is usually only accessible to professional researchers or academics.  Some of these treasures eventually make it down into the museum for various exhibitions, or are transformed into items sold at the ICP gift shop—or even end up as props in movies (some reproductions of photographic prints from the 1930s ended up being used in an upcoming historical drama feature film)!

To learn more about this collection, visit the ICP Research Center webpage.  From there, you’ll be linked to a variety of photographic resources, including the ICP’s eMuseum, a “searchable database of ICP’s Photography Collection.”

IMPOSSIBLE PROJECT LAUNCHES NEW FILM!
The Impossible Project, which resurrected Polaroid film along with their own beautiful recipes for instant film, are about to unleash an 8x10 format. I recently tried their black frame Silver Shade film and three months later, the image is still evolving! The original warmth of the cream and grey tones have now developed into a sepia finish. They’re comparable to a delicately aged albumen print. I’m anxiously awaiting the arrival of this new film, wonder what I’ll produce!

Gordon Parks was one of the seminal figures of twentieth century photography. A humanitarian with a deep commitment to social justice, he left behind a body of work that documents many of the most important aspects of American culture from the early 1940s up until his death in 2006, with a focus on race relations, poverty, Civil Rights, and urban life.
